After breakfast, begin your historical exploration with a visit to the East Bank of
Luxor—home to the most impressive temple complexes in all of Egypt.
Karnak Temple Complex – The Largest Religious Site Ever Built
Prepare to be overwhelmed by the sheer scale and grandeur of Karnak. This vast
complex was built, expanded, and modified over 2,000 years by more than 30
pharaohs, creating the largest religious structure ever constructed.
Highlights of Karnak include:
· Great Hypostyle Hall – The largest religious room ever built, featuring 134
massive columns arranged in 16 rows. The central columns reach an astonishing 21
meters in height and are so large that 50 people could stand on top of each capital.
The walls and columns are covered in intricate hieroglyphics and reliefs depicting
the glory of the pharaohs and their gods.
· Sacred Lake – A massive artificial lake used by priests for ritual purification. Its
size and engineering reflect the importance of water in ancient Egyptian religious
practices.
· Obelisks of Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III – Towering granite monuments that still
stand proudly, inscribed with detailed accounts of the pharaohs' achievements.
· Pylons and Courtyards – Ten massive pylons (monumental gateways) mark the
entrance to the complex, each built by different pharaohs. The Great Court features
rows of columns and statues.
· Temple of Amun-Ra – The main sanctuary dedicated to the chief god of Thebes.
· Chapel of the Sacred Barque – A beautifully decorated structure that housed the
ceremonial boat of the god Amun.
· Avenue of Sphinxes – A 3-kilometer processional route lined with ram-headed
sphinxes connecting Karnak to Luxor Temple (recently restored).

Luxor Temple – The Temple of Rejuvenation
After lunch, visit the elegant Luxor Temple, built primarily by Amenhotep III and
Ramses II. Unlike Karnak, this temple is more intimate and beautifully
proportioned.
Highlights of Luxor Temple:
· First Pylon – The massive gateway features statues of Ramses II and an obelisk
(its twin now stands in Paris's Place de la Concorde).
· Great Court – A beautiful courtyard surrounded by columns, used for public
ceremonies and festivals.
· Hypostyle Hall – A forest of columns with closed papyrus capitals.
· Barque Shrine – The sanctuary where the sacred boat of Amun was kept during
ceremonies.
· Mosque of Abu El-Haggag – A medieval mosque built on top of the temple ruins,
creating a unique layer of history.
· Evening Illumination – The temple is spectacularly illuminated at night. Consider
returning for a magical evening visit (optional).

Overnight in Luxor

The Mysterious West Bank
After breakfast, cross the Nile to the legendary West Bank—the ancient necropolis
of Thebes where pharaohs built their magnificent tombs and mortuary temples.
Valley of the Kings – The Royal Burial Ground
Descend into the royal burial ground of Egypt's pharaohs, where tombs were carved
deep into the limestone mountains to protect the rulers' journey to the afterlife.
What to expect:
· Royal Tombs – Over 63 tombs have been discovered, including the famous tomb
of Tutankhamun. Each tomb features:
· Elaborately decorated walls with scenes from the Book of the Dead and the
Amduat (Underworld texts).
· Hieroglyphics describing the pharaoh's journey through the afterlife.
· Burial chambers containing (originally) massive sarcophagi and treasures.
· Colorful wall paintings that remain remarkably vibrant after 3,000 years.
· Tomb of Tutankhamun (optional extra) – The most famous tomb in the valley,
discovered virtually intact by Howard Carter in 1922. The mummy of the young
king remains in the burial chamber.
· Tomb of Ramses VI – One of the most beautifully decorated tombs with
impressive ceiling paintings.
· Tomb of Seti I (occasionally open) – The most spectacular tomb in the valley,
featuring incredible reliefs and colors.

the fragile decorations. Your guide will take you to the best available tombs.
Temple of Queen Hatshepsut – A Masterpiece in Stone
Visit one of Egypt's most spectacular monuments—the mortuary temple of Queen
Hatshepsut, Egypt's most powerful female pharaoh.
Highlights include:
· Three-Tiered Design – The temple is built into the limestone cliffs in three
ascending terraces, connected by long ramps. The design is unique in Egyptian
architecture.
· Pillared Porticoes – Each terrace features rows of beautiful columns.
· Reliefs and Sculptures – The walls are covered in detailed reliefs telling the story
of Hatshepsut's reign, including:
· The divine birth of the queen.
· The famous expedition to Punt (modern-day Somalia).
· Trading scenes and depictions of the queen's accomplishments.
· Chapels of Anubis and Hathor – Dedicated to the gods of mummification and
love.
· Spectacular Setting – The temple's location at the base of the towering Deir ElBahari cliffs creates a breathtaking visual experience.

Colossi of Memnon
On your way back, stop to photograph the Colossi of Memnon—two massive stone
statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III standing 18 meters tall. These were once the
guardians of the pharaoh's mortuary temple, which has long since disappeared.
Optional afternoon activity: Visit the Valley of the Queens (additional cost) or Deir
El-Medina (the artisans' village).
Return to your hotel for an evening of relaxation.

A Journey to One of Egypt's Best-Preserved Temples
After breakfast, depart for a day trip to the remarkable Dendera Temple Complex,
located approximately 60 kilometers north of Luxor (about 1.5 hours by private
vehicle).
Dendera Temple Highlights:
· Temple of Hathor – The main temple dedicated to the goddess of love, joy, music,
and dance. This temple is one of the best-preserved in Egypt and offers a unique
experience compared to Luxor's temples.
· Sistrum Pillars – The beautiful columns are carved in the shape of the sistrum (the
sacred musical instrument of Hathor).
· Crypts – Dendera features a network of underground crypts where priests stored
sacred objects. Some still contain original reliefs.
· Astronomical Ceiling – The temple's ceiling features one of the most spectacular
astronomical representations from ancient Egypt, including the famous "Zodiac of
Dendera" (the original is in the Louvre; a copy remains in place).
· Rooftop Access – You can climb to the temple's roof for panoramic views of the
complex and surrounding area. Here you'll find small chapels and a beautiful view
of the Nile Valley.
· Temple of Isis – A smaller temple dedicated to the goddess Isis.
· Sacred Lake – A beautifully preserved sacred lake used for purification rituals.
· Birth House (Mammisi) – A chapel celebrating the divine birth of Hathor's son,
Ihy.
The reliefs at Dendera are remarkably well-preserved, offering a vivid picture of
ancient Egyptian religious life and beliefs.
Afternoon – Return to Luxor
After exploring Dendera, return to Luxor. The remainder of the afternoon and
evening are at your leisure.
